An Innovative GSM-Based Smart Doorbell System with Visual Alerts for Enhanced Accessibility of Hearing-Impaired Individuals

Abstract:
Hearing-impaired individuals often experience difficulty using conventional doorbells because these systems rely primarily on auditory signals. As a result, visitors may not be immediately noticed, which can affect safety, communication, and independence within the home environment. To address this issue, this study developed a GSM-based smart doorbell system equipped with LED visual alerts to improve accessibility for individuals with hearing impairment. The system generates both visual notifications and mobile phone alerts whenever the doorbell button is pressed. The prototype was developed using an Arduino microcontroller, GSM module, relay, LED bar light, and push-button switch. System performance was evaluated in a controlled household environment using the following criteria: LED response time, GSM SMS delivery performance, LED visibility under different lighting conditions, and user satisfaction. Results indicated that the LED alert responded almost instantly, with a mean response time of 43 milliseconds, providing immediate visual notification to users. GSM notifications were delivered reliably with a mean response time of 16.213 seconds and a 100% delivery rate. LED visibility was highest in dim and dark environments, which commonly occur in residential settings. User evaluation also indicated a high level of satisfaction, with an overall mean rating of 3.78 out of 4, suggesting that the system is user-friendly and effective. The findings demonstrate that the developed system serves as an efficient, low-cost, and practical assistive technology that improves safety, independence, and inclusivity for individuals with hearing impairment.
