Abstract:
Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases among the elderly and a major risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. Lifestyle factors such as dietary patterns and physical activity play a crucial role in the occurrence of hypertension; however, related research remains limited in primary healthcare facilities. This study aims to analyze the relationship between dietary patterns and physical activity with the incidence of hypertension among elderly patients at Kiara Husada Clinic, Buah Batu, Bandung. This study employs a cross-sectional design with a total sample of 205 elderly individuals selected through the simple random sampling method. Data were collected using a validated and reliable questionnaire, and blood pressure measurements were conducted using a digital sphygmomanometer. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between the independent variables (dietary patterns and physical activity) and the dependent variable (incidence of hypertension). The results indicate that high salt consumption (p-value = 0.001), high-fat consumption (p-value = 0.002), and low intake of vegetables and fruits (p-value = 0.000) are significantly associated with the incidence of hypertension. Additionally, low physical activity is also significantly related to hypertension (p-value = 0.000). Unhealthy dietary patterns and insufficient physical activity increase the risk of hypertension in the elderly. Therefore, interventions such as education on healthy eating habits and promoting physical activity are necessary to reduce the risk of hypertension among the elderly.
